Portrait Name: Color Lover
For this portrait I choose a very close friend of mine. Her name is Beetle, and I love how she changes her hair and always seems like a bright person. Originally I was going to base my portrait off of Lou Ross, but I switched to Roy Lichtenstein after seeing that Ms. Ross's style didn't work. Something unique about my art is probably the flower I cut out and glued onto her shirt. Flowers and gardening are something that makes me, so it was nice to add it. I tried really hard to get her skin tone to be more realistic, while still sticky to my cartoonish style. I've learned that I need to let myself try new things, and to trust my gut.

Recently in my art class we've worked on transformation. Personally, my favorite project was transforming the vegetables. I like trying to get the shade of the pepper right and working with chalk. Another project we did was transforming based off of works done by Rob Gonsalves and Tang Yau Hoong. I choose to base my more on Tang Yau Hoong. His simplified way of art matched the way I draw more than Rob Gonsalves. Simple and too the point, just as I prefer. I also enjoyed the way he hid little things in his art. In my final transformation my favorite part had to be my silhouettes. I like the way the float in the air. The transformation into them is rough, but they were very satisfying to draw. One issue I had was my background color. I'd prefer if it was a lighter pink. I was hoping for a white with a pink tinge, but I wasn't able to get it. Eventually, I settled for the darker shade. I also had issues with my staff lines. Instead of painting them, I just colored them in with sharpie. I think I show creativity in my work with my references to childhood books and they way I saw notes turning into humans. While it could have been executed more cleanly, it' still was satisfying to draw.
American Frog
Recently we did parody works in art. I based mine after American Gothic. I had an idea for what I wanted to do, and I thought it'd be easiest to do with American Gothic. I harbor a deep love for mushrooms and frogs, so I wanted to incorporate those into my work. I used frogs to replace the heads, and I hid mushrooms in the lady's shirt. One of the hardest parts was getting my greens to differentiate. There's a lot of shades of greens in my art. Another issue was small details. I get distracted easily, so I got bored doing them after a while. I'm very proud about how the frog heads turned out, and their outfits. I was able to correctly proportion them, which I was worried about earlier.

Recently, we made prints based off of other cultures. I based mine off of Ancient Greek culture. One of my favorite things about my idea was arranging my cultural pieces into one print. It took some time to figure out how I wanted to arrange them. Two things I learned while making my prints were judging how much ink I needed and how to print in the first time. I've never printed before, so the experience was interesting.
Who am I?
My plan for my identity print came from big aspects of my life. I found things that play a major role in my life and figured out symbols that represented them. I really liked the idea of everything be a cake topper, so i organized it like that. My print shows my identity by showing things I think make me me, like my love for gardening and baking. My print shows by culture by showing that since I've traveled around a lot and lived in a lot of places, I don't really have a set culture. I'm a third culture kid. I did my best to focus on my personal identity and how much I travel, two things that I think set me apart. I also really focused on my love of baking, making a cake the main piece of my art. i had a lot of issues with getting lines deep enough so that they stayed light. There was also an issue trying to figure out what represented me, since few things resonated with me. My favorite thing is my torii, even though it's slightly inaccurate. Japan was my favorite place to live in, and a lot of the things I learned there stuck with me.

My Last High School Summer Break
Over the past summer, I've done little fun and exciting stuff, instead focusing on my financial success. However, I did take a trip to Wisconsin, and visited a few cool places. We stopped at some obscure cheese shop, where I witnessed the most terrifying statue I've ever seen. We also went to visit the Cave of the Mounds, where my first quest ion was, "What if it collapses?" Other than that I threw myself in work and trying to start my own small business, which is still a work in progress. I've created a lot of earrings this summer, and plan on selling those. I've also began knitting my friend a scarf for Christmas, solely starting early due to their insane height needing a long scarf. So far, the scarf has been the most fun. It's been a struggle, considering the yarn I was using decided to unravel, so I had to buy a more expensive type. This year in art class I hope to be able to make a realistic statue. I also hope to improve my vaguely failing art skills. In this year in general, I hope my business takes off, as the side money would be nice. I'm working to be able to pass the year with all A's while working 26 hours a week on top of my various extracurricular activities. All in all, this year will involve a lot of hard work.

Hierarchy Heights
I'll be completely honest, my artwork is based off the songs, "That's How the World Works" and "Jeffery Bezos 1 and 2" from Bo Burnham's Inside. Those songs are about the class system and systematic problems. To showcase the different classes, I decided to make a building. Some of the really bad problems I had with it is showing what I wanted. In the end, it didn't really end up like I visioned. However, it is too late to change it. I also had an issue with the paint staying and being solid. I fixed that by spray painting it. One thing I'm really proud of is the small details I added. Especially the foliage. I think it gives a nice lively element. Next time I may try something different, like a 3D sculpture or something, instead of just painting. I think I need to step out of my comfort zone especially since I'm bad at my comfort zone.

Witchcraft Themed I SPY
My project was witchcraft themed. I used a lot of symbols and ideas that are common to witchcraft. Things like tarot cards, skulls, and potion bottles showed up in my set up. It's a lot of stuff I own already, especially since I like to collect that kind of stuff. I like to think my project is unique in the idea of it. I know only one other person did something like mine, but they didn't have an actual skull like me. Some of my hidden objects included bells, the tower card and a tower statue, and a few shells scattered about. I also hid a cork with a grape pattern in it. I made my project with actual objects and photographed them. I'm really happy about how the lighting with the candles turned out. There was a lot of issues with a glare, but I managed to get the lighting just so. All in all, I'm really proud with the project.

Clay Face
For our clay project I decided to make a clay face planter. I decided to do it because I like to garden and new pots are always welcome. The idea for a face was inspired by a David by Michelangelo flower pot I saw at Ferguson's. To make it interesting I added little elf ears. He's a little lopsided, but I think it adds character. I got really good at making noses, but couldn't quite get the mouth right. Either way, I think it adds a little something to him. I also ended up taking his neck away and making him bigger. I think it suits him more. I'm really happy that you can clearly tell that it is a face. He's a little bit special, but I love him. Getting the face right was really hard. The mouth and eyes were a big struggle. I wish I could have open eyes, but he looked clinically insane every time I tried. I'm probably going to put him outside this summer and fill him with flowers. I think it'll give him a little Afro. He'd probably be good with succulents as well, or maybe even a mini rose bush.

Man in Space in Ceiling
For my senior tile I painted a simple space scene. The hardest part of this was trying to get my astronaut to look good and to get my rocket ship the way I wanted it. It was easy to cover up mistakes with black paint, so I was able to restart as many times as I wanted. I learned a new technique of doing spray paint, and how to make planets with it. I took some risks with finger painting the planets, surprisingly it worked and it looked really good. I specifically picked colors of the planets to match mine and my best friend's favorite colors. We're both interested in space so it's a little friendship thing as well. My plan for the project was what I did, I wanted space and planets, but wasn't sure about the astronaut. I'm glad he turned out well though.
